Over the past 13 years, Greek insolvency law has undergone significant and frequent changes that have made its implementation very difficult. The financial crisis of 2010 brought a big wave of bankruptcies. To date, banks have avoided serious hair-cuts on loans and have been trying to put businesses into immediate liquidation by even indicating the liquidator to quickly receive their share of the liquidation. On the other hand, debtors insist on a hair-cut, while - needless to say - workers are still losing their jobs. For the first time in 2007 (Law 3588/2007) and again with the recent Law 4738/2020, a provision was made for the rapid discharge of the bankrupt trader-debtor from his debts under certain conditions, in order to give him a second chance ('fresh start').
